Official Invitation Letter for Tour de Timor | 13 – 17 September, 2015
Under the V constitutional Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, once again I would like to announce officially that Tour de Timor International mountain bike race will take place from September 13th to September 17th. 2015
The first Tour de Timor international mountain bike race was held in August 2009. The inaugural race was a watershed event for the country, with 300 competitors from 12 countries, over 100 registered media and the largest level of Timorese participation in any event of the young country’s history. The event was an initiative of HE the President of the Republic, Dr. José Ramos-Horta, as part of his peace-building and nation-building campaigns.
The Tour de Timor 2015 has been an annual event on the MTB stage racing calendar ever since, growing and improving every year into a successful international multi-day MTB stage race. It is our hope that the 2015 event will attract more riders and build on the successes of previous years.
Not only is the Tour de Timor an important race on the international sporting calendar, it is also an event that brings many benefits to Timor-Leste as a country as well as to the participants. It serves as a showcase for the stunning landscapes and fascinating traditional culture to be found in our districts. This year, the route will take participants to the western part of Timor Leste . The presence of the international media covering the race also serves to disseminate an important message to an overseas audience: that Timor-Leste has much to offer to visitors seeking natural beauty and adventure. The Tour de Timor presents an opportunity to local communities along the route to offer their hospitality to our guests, to forge friendships with visitors and enjoy the thrills of the race itself. The development of tourism through events such as this helps to build communities, create meaningful employment for our youth and strengthen local economies in the districts and competitors can play a strong role in supporting this effort by adding their voices to the world of mouth promoting Timor-Leste as a wonderful place to visit. Finally, through the TdT, our own national cyclists have been able to flourish and gain the experience to enable them to represent Timor-Leste by competing in their own right at major international events. You could say that there are many, different ways of “winning” the TdT!
But to focus on the cycling for a moment, this year’s race will offer sporting challenges in the gradient of mountain in western part of Timor Leste about the actual route from a technical point of view.
I would personally like to thank everyone who will be taking part in this year’s race. We are delighted to welcome you, and grateful also to who will be giving their time to help us to organize the event. Thanks also to the corporate sponsors last year for yours kinds support to Tour de Timor begin..
